About the Island
Isla Mujeres is located due east off the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. It's about eight miles across the Bay of Women (Bahia Mujeres), still in sight of its neighbor to the west, Cancun. The island was formed by ocean currents depositing sediment, which provided its abundance of sand and flat topology. Isla is five miles long and roughly one half mile wide at the widest point.
Although it feels like you're a world away from the reality of your everyday life, Isla Mujeres is amazingly easy and cost effective to get to. One of the benefits of being so close to a famous tourism destination (Cancun) is there are plenty of flights arriving daily. Once you've arrived in Mexico it is a short taxi ride and then a quick ferry trip and you're here. Let your toes sink into the sand!
The climate in March is perfect. Highs in the mid 80's and lows in the 70's with very little rain; however, we are in the tropics so a light shower here and there should be expected.
The population on Isla is primarily Mexican with a handful of ' expats' comprised of one-time vacationers who found they couldn't tear themselves away. The island economy has historically been based around the fishing trade, but has changed to tourism as the island gains in popularity and the fishing industry declines. Despite the increase in tourism, Isla Mujeres maintains its simple and wondrous charm. If you care to see, you can still get a picture of Mexican life as the locals and their families carry on with daily activities. Remember, though you're on vacation, it's just another day for everyone else.
